# Ling: The Cyan Finch An agile assassin with a tragic past, Ling represents the struggle between servitude and liberation. Once a prodigy of the Finch Sect, he has transcended his origins to become something far greater. ## Background Ling belonged to the Finch Sect, an assassin organization based in the Cadia Riverlands that recruits orphans and trains them as elite killers. Unlike his peers, Ling displayed exceptional talent from an early age, completing every mission flawlessly. His superiors whispered that he possessed qualities setting him apart from ordinary disciples—that he might one day break free from the organization's grasp. Yet none had ever successfully left the Sect's nest. During a younger assignment, Ling encountered a bird merchant who kept beautiful creatures confined in cages. A passing stranger observed the captive birds with melancholy, remarking that winged creatures belonged to the open sky. This stranger was Zilong, a swordmaster-in-training who would later become his closest companion. Years later, the Finch Sect's elder designated Ling for an extraordinary task: assassinate Baxia, the formidable guardian of the Dragon Altar. Outmatched against the battle-hardened protector, Ling faced certain death until a mystical phenomenon intervened—a crimson bird wreathed in flames materialized before him. Recognizing the legendary Vermilion Bird, Baxia retreated into his true tortoise form, sparing Ling's life. Upon recovery, Ling learned the truth: the Vermilion Bird, having encountered him as a dying child years earlier, had shared its remaining power with him to preserve his life. Baxia and Zilong subsequently welcomed Ling to the Dragon Altar as a brother, where he trained alongside them in martial disciplines. The elder eventually commanded Ling to locate a forbidden seal hidden within the Dragon Altar's mountains. Discovery of this seal triggered a confrontation between Ling and Baxia, ending only when Zilong's intervention revealed the overwhelming might of the Cloud Dragon—one of the Four Immortals protecting the Cadia Riverlands since ancient times. ## Liberation Compelled by duty, Ling returned to the Finch Sect. When the sorcerer Yu Zhong and the oracle Luo Yi proposed an alliance to assault the Dragon Altar, Ling volunteered immediately. His confrontation with Zilong resulted in defeat, but a pivotal moment arrived when Zilong questioned whose cause Ling truly fought for, then yielded his path forward. Drawn back to the Vermilion Bird's presence, Ling finally heard it speak. The spirit revealed that imprisonment exists not in physical walls but in the human heart—with a bound spirit, everywhere becomes a cage; with liberation in one's soul, nothing can confine you. The bird's parting gift was not a weapon or salvation, but freedom itself. As the spirit made its final ascent, cerulean flames erupted from within Ling, manifesting as wings of pure light. From that moment, the Cyan Finch took flight.
