The wounded patriarch's injury sparked panic among the tribespeople, who began fleeing rather than resist. Appalled by their capitulation, young Mathilda rallied the tribe to take up arms in defense of their sacred land. Her passionate call fell on deaf ears as fear overwhelmed her people's will to fight.
